Why not do it myself?

VTL and DWI are criminal offenses in New York State. An attorney will preserve
your rights, and minimize the damage to your driving record as well as your
criminal record.  The system is adversarial and designed to take advantage of you.
Judges and prosecutors are not on your side, and are not concerned with your
consequences.

Can a Lawyer promise me that he will eliminate all the points from any ticket I get?

The answer is no.  Attorneys in New York are ethically restricted from
guaranteeing results in criminal matters.  Also, they cannot take cases on a
contingency basis.  It is true that any good Attorney will take advantage of any
technical or procedural flaws that can cause a ticket to be dismissed.  However,
with most tickets the ticketing officer usually performs their duties in accordance
with the law.  So, most traffic trials will result in a conviction.  The most common
result in a case occurs through the plea bargaining process between your
Attorney and the Prosecutor.  An Attorney has the knowledge of the law that is
required to get the best possible result, minimizing points on your license.  A
variety of factors go into this process including, but not limited to: local
Prosecutor or District Attorney policies, where an alleged perpetrator is licensed,
the severity of the alleged transgression, and the driving record of the alleged
perpetrator.  Also, many Prosecutors will take into account whether or not an
alleged perpetrator has an Attorney.
